The address to notepaper: Stoughton House,Stanhope Road,East Croydon.Inevitable ageing and slight grubbing/darkening to pale blue paper-covered boards which also have inevitable rubbing and scuffing with shelf-wear, particularly to bottom edges and both top+bottom sets of slightly bumped corners - all with some minimal paper loss.Plain white endpapers are generally clean - apart from ffe - description to follow.Cream cloth blindspine also lightly grubbed and sporadically marked to board's edges front+rear; with spine/backstrip darkened and with minimal bumping with reciprocal creasing to both head+foot of same, but with crisp, blocked gilt letters very slightly dulled, but not oxidised,to same also.Top edges gilt and trimmed,fore-edge+bottom edges aged/darkened and deckled (untrimmed); contents generally bright, tight, clean, solid and sound with very, very minimal sporadic foxing/spotting to body/ block of text - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.Prelims including and upto half-title,tissue guarded frntis, title page and contents list/table,bear the heaviest and majority of any foxing/spotting.Front free endpaper slightly grubbed, due to overspill of glue/adhesive used to paste letter to it,which has browned to letter edges causing vertical creasing from top to bottom of ffe and behind the actual pasted-on letter/notepaper.Towards foot of ffe,an ink stamp 'Society of Friends Plymouth',same stamp applied to foot of penultimate page,pp175.Tissue guard to frntis aged and browned, but still in situ. The author has also handwritten an ink annotation to last page, under end of the index,'page 14.For Mr.+ Mrs. Fry read Gurney.' Described hard, but fairly and honestly, probably too detailed - but it is certainly better than it reads! Georgina King Lewis (nee Stoughton),b.1847 - d.1924,a member of the Stoughton family; her father,John Stoughton,D.D.,was a Congregationalist preacher and a friend and admirer of Elizabeth Fry,and her brother Thomas Wilberforce, the Stoughton,of what was to eventually become Hodder & Stoughton, the publishing house. The firm's origins in the 1840's were as Messrs Jackson and Walford,Thomas W. Stoughton joined, aged 14,and were the official publisher for the Congregational Union. In 1861 the firm became Jackson, Walford and Hodder; but in 1868 Jackson and Walford retired, and Thomas Wilberforce Stoughton, with Matthew Hodder then created the firm,Hodder & Stoughton. The firm published both religious and secular works, and it's religious list contained some progressive titles at that time. Georgina, described as 'a friend of the oppressed',much of her work, involvement and life followed in the footsteps of the philanthropic Victorian Quakers.Involved in the Temperance Movement, particularly in Croydon,a trust was set up,with Georgina donating money towards it.The condition with that gift, was that no intoxicants be sold on the premises. The old County Temperance Hotel in Station Road,West Croydon, was bought.Mrs. King Lewis renamed the building Ruskin House and it opened in 1912.Her other philanthropic work included getting built a Mission Hall for Ealing's cabmen. At that time also, she went to South Africa giving succour to Boer women and children, who were kept in concentration camps by the British fighting the Boers in the Anglo-Boer wars.
